They are very fun to read!

Ruth and her class did an end-of-the-year dance recital at school.  Each grade did a different style of dance.  The first graders did Hawaiian-style dances.  Ruth was awesome!

Ruth's Story

Ruth wrote a story at school. She drew a picture to go with it. (spelling and punctuation are original)

Once upon a time long, long ago there was a tyrannosaurus.  She had lost her herd.  She was very very hungry.  She decided she would hunt herself.  She looked and looked and looked but she could not find food.  Then she saw a grate huge vally filled with dinosaurs to eat.  She saw a trisarutops.  She traped it by stomping on it's tail.  She picked it up and ate it in one huge gulp.  She was full but she needed a drink.  She saw a huge lake.  She drunk from it.  It was delishis!  She went to sleep.  She dreamed of bringing her herd to the vally so they could eat to.  All of a suden she heard a rusling sound.  She looked around.  She saw her herd!  They ran to her.  They huged her.  She shoed the vally to them.  They decided they would eat brekfist.  They staed there and ate.  The End

Science Party!

We have a tradition of having a 'friend party' every-other year for birthdays.  This year was a 'friend party' year. I was thinking that we wanted to have about 10 kids so I invited a few extra (because there's never a party that everyone shows up to)  then last minute, Ruth decided to invite a couple of other neighbor kids.  This brought our total up to 16 kids.  And guess what!  They ALL showed up!  Since the weather was bad, we had to do it inside.  It was a MAD HOUSE.  But we had fun.  If it weren't for Keli and my mom I would have drown in a sea of first-graders.  Anyway, because of the chaos, I was lucky to get as many pictures as i did.

For Ruth's Science Party we:

1. Made home-made bouncy balls
2. Made home-made volcanoes
3. Experimented with invisible ink
4. Made oobleck
5. Ate cake and ice cream
6. Set off the volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar
7. Made a diet coke/mentos fountain outside

The kids had lots of fun and Ruth made out like a bandit with more presents than she knows what to do with. I'm so glad it's over!

I rigged it so I could put dry ice inside so it would create a fog effect.

Ruth Ellen Jones--7 Years Old

I don't know where the time has gone.  7 years is a long time but it feels like it was only yesterday that Ruth was just a baby.  We love our girl.  She is becoming such a wonderful young lady.  Ruth has so many great qualities and talents that we love so much.  Here is a list of seven things that are awesome about Ruth (I did 7 because that's how old she is... there are a lot more awesome things about her, but it would take all day to name them).

• Ruth has a special way of understanding what people are feeling.  She knows when someone is feeling sad and she always tries to cheer them up.  
• Ruth has become an excellent reader.  She can read an entire 90-page chapter book in one day.  Her dad and I are so proud of this fact.  
• Ruth is VERY friendly.  It's not hard for her to make new friends.  
• Ruth is great at helping her brothers.  If I ever need a hand with them, she doesn't hesitate to help.
• Give Ruth a tree and she'll be up in it in no time.  I think if we ever built her a tree house, she'd live in it.  Climbing is not hard for her.
• While Ruth really enjoys spending time outside getting dirty and playing hard, she also loves to get dressed up and look pretty.  
• Ruth is SO funny.  Her sense of humor is great.  Her giggle is very contagious too.  We have a lot of fun times laughing with Ruth.

Willeeom Shaksbeer

Ruth decided to write a book about William Shakespeare.  When she finished, she read it to us.  We were baffled by what she wrote.  Now I'm not an historian and I haven't checked her facts, but she sure is convincing. I've decided to write it all down here.  I'm keeping the spelling the way she did it (because it's cute...and it's funny to see how her mind works when sounding out words).  So, for your enjoyment:

Willeeom Shaksbeer was a fames play riter.  He made Romeeoe and Joleeet and a mid sumer night streem.  He was in the time of qeen alisabith.  He praformd a midsumer night streem at the palece.  In his time girls couldn't prform in plays boys actid girl parts.

He invintid words like upstirs and down stirs.  Pepol think he rote 300 playse.

Qeen alisabith had black teeth.  In this time pepole didn't have toothbrushes.

She just doesn't stop....

Ruth keeps surprising us with the things she says. Tonight we were driving home from my parents' house just minding our own business when she said this:

"I think that the Earth spins slowly because if it spinned faster the days and nights would be shorter."

Are 5 year-olds really supposed to be figuring stuff like that out on their own? We're not prepared to deal with her brain. Right now we are doing research about why exactly the days and nights are shorter in the winter time (something to do with the tilt of the Earth?) because she wants to know. I really should have applied myself more in my High School science class.

First Day of Kindergarten!

Our little girl is growing up! (in case you haven't noticed) On Monday last week Ruth started Kindergarten. She is no longer a preschooler (now do we call her a 'schooler'?)

She has a great teacher named Mrs. Wahlquist. So far Ruth seems to be really loving it. Here's what she thinks:

"My first day of school was awesome because I had a great time with my new friends. I got to meet my teacher Mrs. Wahlquist and I feel great that I have school.

I do recess quite early, and I also do recess inside too (just in case I can't play on the playground...cause there's bees). I also think it's quite cool at school. I think when others go to school, it feels really fun. I learn about the letters and I learn about all my favorite things. I even do a fun song called "Who Stole the Cookies From the Cookie Jar." That's all."

Ruth is an author.

Ruth has written a couple of books now. Well, dictated more accurately. She tells us the story while we write it down (word-for-word) then she illustrates. This first one is called "The Smile Saver." She wrote this one in about October of last year (2008).

The Smile Saver

Once upon a time there were 4 happy smiles. They were so happy they could eat 40,000 bottles. One day...

"There was a really bad guy who trapped them in a bottle. He reached in and grabbed one of the smiles and stole its purse. He didn't want anyone to see so he slowly tiptoed, and as fast as he could go he slowly went to find Ruth. She was a princess and loved her crown."

"So then he hid the purse and then he came back and said "As soon as I get your princess, I will destroy her." And he did. It began with the tough part. he put them in a big jar and showed them his ugly teeth. "Shhhh! This is a secret!" he yowled. They started crying and now they are frowns. The happy place turned into a frown place."

"The superhero saved the day and let the frowns free and they turned into smiles. The bad guy was defeated. The End."

I saw this fun little survey on my friend's blog. It's a survey for Ruth! I asked her the questions and wrote down her answers:

"Hmmm, let me think. I love you, too. Cause I always say I love you."

"When I give her chocolate!"

"When I hit my brother."

4) What does your mom do to make you laugh?
“Tickles me!"

“I think it's 12."

6) What was your mom like as a child?
“I think she looked like a little baby and she had diapers."

“ummm.. I think 15."

8) What is your mom's favorite thing to do?
“Be lazy and read books."

9) What does your mom do when you're not around?
“She goes on a date."

10) If your mom becomes famous, what will it be for?
“A show like a famous of a show."

11) What is your mom really good at?
“She's good at giving me hugs, she tells me things pretty well, she's smart, she can stand on one let, she can stomp on the floor without making a hole."

12) What is your mom not so good at?
“Holding me. Because I'm too heavy. And she isn't good at standing on her head about 20 min."

13) What does your mom do for her job?
“She cleans the house and she takes care of my panties (just in case I have a leak of peep.)"

14) What is your mom's favorite food?
“I think it's going to be... spaghetti!"

15) What makes you proud of your mom?
“Because she helps me take care of my friends?"

16) If your mom were a cartoon character, who would she be?
“Maybe she could be the mom in James and the Giant Peach."

17) What do you and your mom do together?
“We read kid's books or watch TV or play outside or go to the park or go to a restaurant or go to a friends house."

18) How are you and your mom the same?
"We are both girls, we have long hair, we have the same looking noses our hands look the same."

19) How are you and your mom different?
“Because she has glasses."

20) How do you know your mom loves you?
“Because she says 'I love you' after I say 'I love you.'"

Ruth's letter to Santa

A few days ago Ruth wanted to write a letter to Santa so she dictated and I wrote. I figured Santa would get the letter faster if I just posted it here instead of sending it...

Dear Santa,
I love you. I know you are so nice when you give me presents. Everyone knows about you, Santa. So if you want to give me presents you can put twenty-thousand under my tree. And don't forget to wrap them! I want a cub that comes to life, a Christmas ornament, a Wall-E and that's all.
Well, I better go now Santa. I need to eat my dinner.

The Curse of November and Ruth is Thankful

We are not that busy for the holidays. We aren't going out of town. We're not in charge of making a huge feast for Thanksgiving (only contributing a few dishes to one). And yet, I have been feeling the rush of the holidays and have been neglecting my blogging duties. Sorry!

On a completely different note, we've been telling Ruth about how we spend our time around Thanksgiving thinking about all the things we're thankful for. She wanted to compile a list of the things she's thankful for and put it here on the blog for all the world to see. So here it is:

The sun,
Food I have.
I like everything so you might as well hear the rest.
I love my mommy so much so I'm thankful for her.
I'm thankful for the stores
and lemonade stands,
beautiful winter,
squirrels,
gazelles,
turkey we eat at thanksgiving,
beautiful sheep at the farm,
mice,
the things on TV,
things that make me happy like cats, dogs, puppy dogs and lots more
so don't go away until I'm done.
I'm thankful for stories,
my friends,
my grandmas,
my grandpas,
my little cousins,
and thats all!

What does a banana do when it's tired out?

You know, I went to church and I went to primary. I learned about being friends and I colored a picture of a dog and cat being friends. And I liked how I do stuff and I play with toys and I ate cookies and I did a circle and it was real real fun.

Gareth went to his first little tiny class (nursery). He made his own little hand champion thing (a necklace made of a handprint). And then when we picked him up he was okay, except he started crying. It was not fun but I still loved him. I looked at his thing and I was suprised because he colored on the hand without getting it on the floor! I was very happy to see him do that. I know how much I love stuff today. Why don't you go to an I Love You website and you'll find lots of fun games! Oh! Don't forget to look on the game internet where there's church games to play on church days. Don't forget to line up your eyes to that beautiful story because it's all about me! Do you know everything you know? Do you? do you? do you? do you?
