Stitches!

Okay, so this happened about a month ago but who's counting, really?

It was a perfect day.  Jones flew out early that morning to Florida for a job interview.  While he was in Phoenix for a layover he got to have a conversation with Ted Raimi (who I most remember as Joxer from Xena).  Hooray for famous people!

Anyway, so we were at home and the kids had just gone outside to play.  I was lagging a little bit behind because I was finishing up a game with Keli and my mom.  Suddenly, I heard a very loud BOOM! (which I learned later was actually the sound of Gareth's head hitting the metal table) and then a WAAAAAAAAAAH! from Gareth.  This was not his typical cry or scream so I knew something wasn't right.  I went running out there and saw Gareth dripping blood.  At first I thought it was just another one of his bloody noses (he get's those a LOT) but then I realized it wasn't coming from his nose.  I took a closer look and saw that his lip was split open and hanging at an odd angle.  I scooped him up and took him back into the house where I was able to get a closer look (all this while poor Gareth is screaming).  I looked inside his mouth and realized the ugliness of the lip was not the worst of it.  Gareth's front teeth were bleeding and knocked back.  Also, his gums were really scraped up.  Then I noticed that his tears had blood in them...which led to me noticing a cut above his eye.

Thankfully, my mom was there and I was able to put Gareth in the car and leave Ruth and Ronan at home.  We went to the urgent care (because our insurance has told us that if we go to the emergency room when it's not a life-threatening emergency we run the chance of them not paying for it).  After waiting for a while at the urgent care, we were able to see the doctor.  He looked Gareth over and took some pictures.  When he saw his teeth and gums he decided that it would be a bad idea for him to attempt to sew him up there at the Urgent Care.  The cuts above his teeth had exposed the roots of the teeth and it would be a very difficult procedure without sedation.  So off to the emergency room we went!
They put on a wet bandage at the Urgent Care so the wound wouldn't dry up while we were going over to the ER

Some might say that it was a waste of time to go to the Urgent Care and then have to go to the Emergency room after all that, but it really wasn't.  The doctor at the Urgent Care called up the emergency room doctor and gave a detailed diagnosis and update and sent over the pictures and papers.  When we got to the Emergency room everyone (dr's, nurses, respiratory person dude, etc.) was already updated and ready to move along with the procedure.  I was very impressed.

First, they had to give Gareth an IV.  I thought Gareth would scream when they poked him (I know from experience that getting an IV is not fun at ALL) but he didn't even flinch.  I guess all the pain from the actual injury gave him some good pain tolerance.  After he was all set and we had the doctor, three nurses and the respiratory person dude in position, they gave him the medication that would help him sleep.  It's this thing called conscious sedation.  I don't know exactly what it means but it didn't put him in a deep sleep and it only required a respiratory person dude (yeah, i don't know the exact term...)--instead of an anesthesiologist--to be there.  While we were all standing around waiting for Gareth to fall asleep, he begin to be a bit loopy.  At one point he said to one of the nurses "Where is the sun?" and she said "In the sky." and he said "It comes up over the mountains and goes across the sky and then goes away at night." and she said "yes, it does."  Then a few minutes later, to the same nurse, he said "You have a watch." and she said "what?" (because his words were getting pretty slurred) so he said "You have a watch on." and then he all-of-a-sudden sat up and reached over toward her to touch her watch.  The other nurses pulled him back and held him down (apparently they don't want him moving around much while he's falling asleep).  So then he looked at the nurse and said "What time is it?"  and then he fell asleep.  It was pretty funny/sad to see him like that.

Once he was asleep, they numbed him all up.  The nurses and the respiratory person dude had to all hold him down (he was wiggling too much in his sleep).  They had to keep assuring me that he wasn't feeling anything and wasn't hurting.  After they stitched above his eye, his lip, and his gums, they left him alone to wake up on his own.  By this time it was about 8pm.  I think in his mind, it was bed time because he was not waking up.  After about 45 minutes, the doctor came in and poked him a few times (with his finger) Gareth finally woke up.
Starting to wake up.

A close-up of the stitches.

We left the hospital at about 9pm.  Gareth hadn't eaten since noon and I was supposed to give him some major pain killers when we got home (which required him to have food in his stomach) so I decided to get him some food on the way home.  The tricky part was that his teeth were still knocked loose and we didn't want to put pressure on them until he was able to see a dentist the next day so I got him some ICE CREAM!  When we got home, he was getting lots of attention from his grandparents and aunts and uncle (they were all admiring his battle wounds) sitting at the island eating ice cream.  It was then that he said this: "Mom, this is the best day ever."  I'm pretty sure that he was only saying that because a) he was still pretty groggy and b) he was eating ice cream for dinner.
Here he is saying "Mom, this is the best day ever."

The next day at the dentist, we got xrays that showed that the tooth had been knocked out of its socket but it wasn't broken.  The dentist didn't want to pull the tooth because he didn't want to rip out all the stitches  that were in the gums right above it.  We went back for a check up two weeks later and discovered that the gums above one of the teeth have receded (there is a break in the gums and we can see the tooth all the way to the root) but when his permanent tooth grows in it will bring some new gums with it (so the dentist says).  The other front tooth has turned a light shade of grey.  We have another appointment in a couple weeks to decide if we should leave them there and let them fall out on their own or go ahead and pull them.
Gareth and Ronan hanging out at the dentists office. (watching a movie)

Gareth has amazed me throughout this whole ordeal.  Sure, he screamed when it first happened but through the ER and the days afterward when his lip was so swollen and his eye was black he didn't complain or whine at all (except for the one time when he said he was too embarrassed to go into the store because of his 'fat lip').
Three days later and STILL swollen.  Poor kid.

Oh and I bet you're wondering what exactly happened to cause all this?  Well we didn't really know since nobody actually saw it happen.  A few days after, we took Gareth outside and he showed us.  Apparently he had been running towards the fire table (it's like a fire pit, but in a table) at full speed but he tripped and went flying face-first right into the edge.  Poor kid.

And the job interview in Florida?  Still don't know yet, but it's looking positive.

Pregnancies.

I've been thinking a lot about my past pregnancies lately. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I'm going through it again and noticing how completely different they all have been. I'm trying to compare this time to the previous two in hopes that that will help me determine the gender of this baby but what I've come up with so far is that I'm having a half-boy-half-girl-half-alien. I thought it'd be good for journal reasons to write down and compare my different pregnancies. If you don't care or want to be spared the details then you have my permission to skip this one. It's mostly for me and my descendants to read anyway.

Pregnancy #1: Ruth
Dates of pregnancy: August 2003 through April 2004 (approx. 9 months)
How I found out: I peed on a magic stick, it told me I was expecting. I wasn't surprised though...I was two weeks late.
How I felt emotionally: Embarrassed (it was un-planned after all...), Excited (I had planned my entire life to have children), Nervous (I have to push something the size of a watermelon out of where?!?!). No real changes in actual day-to-day emotions.
How I felt physically: the first 8 weeks were great! after that I was nauseated ALL the time and the smell that bothered me the most was the smell of my husband after a long day at work (sorry Jonesy, I still love you!). The nausea did not end until Ruth was born. Had heartburn so bad I felt it in my ears.
Cravings: none.
Aversions: Husband's sweat, the sight of a large family-size can of Wal-mart brand Ravioli (still makes me feel yucky--the small sized can didn't/doesn't have any effect on me), and many, many other things.
Felt First Movements: I was probably around 24 weeks when I first felt Ruth kick me.
Braxton Hicks Contractions (those are the contractions that aren't real contractions, just tightening of the belly): None. (that I felt)
General health:
Didn't get sick a single time. Not even a cold.
Weight Gained: 20 pounds
Labor: At 39 weeks. Contractions started at 11:30 pm. Pushed the kid out at 7:20AM. epesiotmy (spelling?), stitches.
Result of Labor: baby girl, 6lb 6oz, 18.5 in. Rushed to NICU per breathing troubles. In NICU 5 days with pneumonia.
Post-Labor: got very nauseous. almost puked all over myself.

Pregnancy #2: Blighted Ovum.
Dates of Pregnancy: July 2005- September 2005
Details: Got pregnant, apparently the fetus aborted very early on (still microscopic sized). The placenta didn't get the memo and kept on growing-tricking my body into thinking it was still pregnant. Went in for first ultrasound and did not find a baby (was about 14 weeks along). Had surgery two days later.

Pregnancy #3: Gareth
Dates of Pregnancy: July 2006- March 2007 (approx. 9 months)
How I found out: Peed on another stick! (those sticks are pretty useful)
How I felt emotionally: Excited (we'd been trying for so long). Day-to-day emotions normal.
How I felt physically: Starting about week 9 I felt pretty nausiated. There were things that made me sick. I also had a ball of flem at the back of my throat constantly that would cause random puking. Week 16 my morning sickness went away completley and I felt stupendous! (the ball of flem stuck around though so I continued to have random puking parties).
Cravings: Oreo shakes with lots of oreos(they had to be big, soggy chunks), arby's roast beef sandwiches, Wendy's Jr Bacon Cheesburgers. (nothing healthy)
Aversions: Raw chicken, anything between the hours of 5 and 8pm, and a Deigo music CD that we had checked out from the library (still to this day when I hear songs from that disk I feel a bit sick)
Felt First Movements: Around 16 weeks
Braxton Hicks Contractions: started around 19 weeks. Felt them all the time. Very annoying and uncomfortable.
General Health:
pretty healthy except for the time I got the flu (the fever, achy kind, not the puky kind).
Weight Gained: 3 pounds (no, that is not a typo)
Labor: at 39 weeks and 1 day. Contractions started at 12:30 AM and baby came out at 9:35AM (ish.. i can't remember exactly right now). No epesiotmy, no stitches (thanks Dr. Perrin!).
Result of Labor: baby boy. 6lbs 15oz. 19.5in. Healthy!
Post-Labor: didn't get nausious (the nurse had slipped me food and snacks during my labor :) I did have an ill-effect from my epidural...my right butt cheek was numb for two months!!!

Pregnancy #4: Penelope or Mortimer (no, those aren't the real names we're thinking of using)
Dates of Pregnancy: September 2008- June 2009 (I am 19 weeks right now, check the ticker on the side to keep track)
Due Date: June 8, 2009
How I found out: Peed on another stick! This time I was actually surprised.. wasn't expecting positive (except I had to have been thinking it was possible.. I don't just pee on sticks for no reason...)
How I feel emotionally: Surprised! Day-to-day emotions have been VERY rollercoaster-y. I cry a lot these days... for stupid reasons...don't make fun.
How I feel physically: Starting about week 6 feeling morning sickness (not as bad as the last ones) VERY tired. Still bad heartburn, pepsid ac helps. Got the flem again (thus inducing random puking episodes.) VERY tired.
Cravings: Hot wings, chow mein noodles, corned beef, chocolate and licorice, and those gummy orange slices. Oh, and lots and lots of Dr. Pepper.
Aversions: Raw chicken, anything between the hours of 5 and 8pm, the smell of garlic.
Felt First Movements: Around 16 weeks.
Braxton Hicks Contractions: started around 18 weeks. annoying, but nice to know my uterus works and is practicing for the real thing!
General Health:
I've had a couple colds. Got a bad sinus infection at around 6 weeks, antibiotics cleared it up.
Weight Gained so far: according to the scale at the dr's office, I have gained a total of one pound so far.

Side affects during ALL my pregnancies: The enamel on my teeth disappears. The dental hygienest was most distraught. Cure: swish with ACT Flouride mouthwash every day.

Dentists and Volleyball

You know you've seen too much of your dentist when you start dreaming about him. No, it wasn't anything inappropriate, but it was very strange. In my dream, I was with my brother Dustin and we went over to my dentist's house where his wife taught us how to make crab legs (ewwww). While she was busy showing Dustin how to do something with those legs, I snuck into the other room where my dentist was. He showed me this huge mural on his wall of his family tree and was talking about how his wife had so many people on her side of the tree but his side was very sparse. Weird huh? I wonder what it all means. Maybe it means I need to introduce him to the church so he can do his family history? On a side note, I had a dream that I was changing a poopy diaper and the poop just kept coming out and wouldn't stop. Okay, that's gross.. sorry. Last night was a night full of strangeness.

I'm sure all those weird dreams blossomed from the fact that I was utterly exhausted. On Tuesday nights I go play volleyball with a bunch of women from my stake. It starts at 9 pm and usually goes to between 11 and 11:30. Volleyball is a very fun sport to play but it sure makes me feel sore. Usually from about 9 to 10:30 I try to play hard but by 10:30 I'm so tired that the last hour is just goofing off. It's funny because most of the ladies that go are moms so they are all just as tired as I am. We get pretty silly sometimes...it's great.
