BAM--May

This month's Book A Month Challenge Theme was Mothers. We didn't really feel much like being serious so we chose to read one of my favorite non-serious books. My secret reason for suggesting it was so I could get Jonesy to read it. The book we read had a lot to do with Mothers... well one mother in particular. It was called: Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom. I have actually blogged about this book before, just click here.

Just to give a little background, here is a little tidbit about the book:

" Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance, hasn't hunted a demon in ages.
That must be why she missed the one wandering through the pet food aisle of the San Diablo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, he managed to catch her attention an hour later-when he crashed into the Connor house, intent on killing her.
Now Kate has to clean up the mess in her kitchen, dispose of a dead demon, and pull together a dinner party that will get her husband elected to County Attorney-all without arousing her family's suspicion. Worse yet, it seems the dead demon didn't come alone...
It's time for Kate Connor to go back to work. "

Havilah's Opinion:

This book was a lot of fun for me. I obviously don't have any skills in the demon-hunting industry, but I found that I could very easily relate to the character (mostly because she's a mother, but also because she's awesome and so am I). I rate this book among my favorites; not because it was life-changing or because I was inspired by the story, but because it was fun, exciting and very entertaining. I'm curious to see how my husband felt about the book. Maybe I just loved it because it's about a soccer mom who kicks butt.. or maybe I loved it because it's a great book. Either way, I highly recommend this read!

Jones' opinion:

The book was cute. The main character , as Havilah points out, is a soccer mom who happens to be a retired demon hunter. I thought the action was fairly enjoyable and the dialogue was believable. The twists in the book, however, were easily seen about 30 pages away, and a lot of background information, (such as why the particular manner of dispatching demons works) was sadly lacking. All in all, an enjoyable piece of fluff. This is the first in a series, and Havilah owns the first three, so if I get bored, I may read the rest. I think you can take it or leave it.

Good ol' Woodcrest

We loved staying in the Woodcrest Apartments in Flagstaff so much that we found some Woodcrest apartments in Lubbock to live in!

It's official. We have a place to live and a date to move in. We'll be in our new home one week from today! We're very excited/nervous.

This place is lovely. It has two pools. The apartment has air conditioning and a large-ish kitchen. We'll only be a mile away from church (and the temple too!). And a hop, skip, and a jump from a SUPER WAL-MART! YAY! I'm also excited to find that the library is only 5 minutes away too. I was looking at their library website and reading their schedule of events for children and found that Lubbock will be the perfect place for us. There is storytime every week and tons of other activites (puppetshows, crafts, magic shows, animal shows, etc.) Plus our new ward looks like they have a playgroup every week as well. Yay us!

A Good Book

My mother bought me a copy of Stephenie Meyer's new book: The Host. Unlike the Twilight series (written for teenagers), The Host is a book more aimed at an adult audience. Instead of vampires we have parasites--alien parasites.

I really enjoyed this book. I think I even liked it more than Twilight. There is some romance in the book but it's not unbearably mushy like it is in those other books (don't get me wrong, the unbearable mushy-ness in Twilight is lots of fun but it gets a bit old). The characters in The Host are well developed and very likeable.

I recommend you ALL to read this book! It's a great science-fiction novel. I even think Jonesy would like it but he's too afraid to read it.

Is this what we've been waiting for??

Jonesy got a job offer at Texas Tech University in Lubbock Texas! We're still thinking about it but we have mostly decided to take the job. I never imagined myself as a Texan even though my mom is Texan and my ancestors from her line were in Texas before it was even Texas but now I am looking forward to becoming an official Texan. YeeHaw! Jones is excited too because it's a great job and he really likes all the people he'll be working with. Ruth is excited because I assured her that they have movie theatres there that will be playing Wall-E the movie when it comes out on June 27th.

Random Updates

We've been kinda shy about the blog lately. Mostly because we're lazy. Also because life has been pretty hectic lately. We said goodbye to Flagstaff last week. We're going to miss a couple things about the place, but mostly we're excited to begin a new life somewhere else (which still remains a mystery!) One thing we miss a lot is storytime at the library. Ruth has spent the past two years really getting to know the librarians. Every time we walked into the library all the librarians would happily greet Ruth. They were even on their toes enough to have a new and different bookmark ready for her to take home every week. Ms. Karen was Ruth's favorite. She is the best story-teller ever. Here is a picture of Ruth, Ms. Karen and Ms. Karen's granddaughter...



Ruth was talking today about how she misses her friends. Daniel was (and is..she's excited to write him a letter) her best bud. They loved to eat pizza together and run around being crazies together.


A couple days after we arrived in Alpine Ruth woke up with a very high fever of 104.6. We were able to keep it down aroudn 102 with ibuprofin but when she still had the fever on the third day we took her to see a doctor. Bronchitus again. The inhaler helped her cough instantly but the medicine didn't help the fever go away until the fifth day. She spent all those days sleeping on the couch. Poor thing.


On May 2nd, we (Jonesy and I) celebrated our 5-year anniversary! Yay us! After surviving the past five years we feel that we can do anything.
We celebrated by leaving the children with Grandma and going to see a movie (Ironman--awesome flick...highly recommended!) eating dinner at a hawiian grill and going to an improv comedy show at a club called Comedy Sportz. Here we are in love and waiting for the show to start...

After the laughs we headed to Village Inn (the place we had our first date) for some pie. This is Jonesy being annoyed by the table FULL of highschool children who were thinking they were all that and a bag of fritos because they were out past 10pm without their mommies to take care of them...


After the pie we took an amazing trip to Wal-mart to buy diapers for our baby boy. All around it was a lovely anniversary. We look forward to another five years (mostly because we have promised ourselves a cruise for our tenth anniversary)

Oh on a side note, I was very sad to not get a picture of the wonderful surprise we found floating in the toilet today if only Jonesy didn't have to pee so badly I could have run and got my camera....apparently Gareth had snuck in there to find a place to hide his bottle and keep it cold.

This is why we don't have a dog!...
