Talking?

Gareth is pretty good at sign language. He's learning lots of signs. The ones he knows now are: food, bottle, brush teeth, bath, hello, and music. It's a lot of fun watching him figure out that a hand movement can get him what he wants.

The other day at Walmart, Gareth was holding a toy then he said "Uh-oh" and threw the toy out of the basket. He has continued to use this word in context (when he drops something or someone else drops something). We are trying to decide if "uh-oh" counts as a first word. We think that since he uses it in context then it can only be considered a first word, but then again it's more of a sound than a word... but then again, words are only sounds themselves. So what do YOU think? Has Gareth said his first word?!

Here is what the On-line site of Merriam-Webster Dictionary says

uh–oh
Pronunciation:
\ˈə-ˌō, usually with strong glottal stops before the vowels\

Function:
interjection

Date:
1971

—used to indicate dismay or concern

See - it's defined in a highly respected dictionary. It's definitely (look, pun!) a word.
